"Secure, Easy to install, little assembly required" 2009-08-11
By D. LaVan (New Haven, CT)
I bought this for a 24' fiberglass extension ladder. I don't have enough flat wall space to hang the ladder on the wall, so I used this thing to hang it between the two single garage doors. Worked out well, easily lifts the load, and was easy to install. I used my own #10 x 3" screws to really bite into the wood. I think the ceiling of the garage has two layers of drywall (I believe that is to be fire rated, but it could just be a weird install) so the included 2" screw aren't going to get too much bite into the joists.

The cheaper units were tempting, but come without the aluminum rail, which I liked, so I went this way. If you are willing to fiddle around with it, the rail isn't really necessary.

"Simple Hooks Are Probably Better !!!" 2009-07-13
By Scott D. Richardson (Mercer Island, WA United States)
Last summer I remodeled my garage. Tape, mud, paint and wood trim for the walls; custom built cabinets; epoxy paint for the floors - most of my friends have serious garage envy!

Of course, I wanted to store my bikes in a befitting manner so I bought two Racor bike lifts. They work. But the truth is that two sets of bike hooks would have worked better.

My garage ceiling is only 9 feet. So I need to store the bikes as high up as possible. In this respect my old bike hooks worked better since the Racor lifts tend to waste a few more inches. Also, as previously noted in other reviews the rope and associated locking mechanism work poorly. The rope locks tend to let the rope slip so it takes a lot of finesse to position the bike where you want it and this slipping action tends to fray the rope a bit.

My best advice: consider using simple, properly installed, rubber coated bike hooks if you can. However, this Racor lift is probably the best alternative IF (and only IF) you have a 10+ foot ceiling. Also, if you're going to install the Racor lift yourself make sure you have a stud finder on hand; else, you will need to have bucket of spackle to fill all your errant drill holes.

 "Works well" 2009-06-29
By G. Hayes (Denver, CO)
I purchased 2 of these Racor Pro bike lifts after reading negative reviews of a cheaper bike lift I was considering. I didn't want the bikes crashing down on anybody so I purchased this more expensive version. The directions and installation seemed easy enough, and the bike lifts are easy enough to operate - my younger kids use them. The rope (at this point) seems more than strong enough to withstand alot of use. The ropes are very long which I didn't need because our garage ceiling isn't that high. I would think the long ropes would help when installing the Bike Lifts in a garage with a high ceiling. Overall I would say I am quite pleased with the operation, quality, and price.

"Great idea - spotty implementation" 2008-12-08
By Lepton (Columbus, OH)
The installation was relatively straight forward except for three problems.

1) Part D - Pulley stop blocks All 4 of these were too wide to fit in the slot in the extrusion. I had to take approximately 3/32" off of one edge to allow them to fir the slot. Given the that there was considerable effort put into the styling and manufacture of the extrusion I was surprised to see such an oversight on a simple to produce piece of punched steel

2) The directions - overall good except for the one part that really matters - threading the rope through the locking mechanism. The directions on this point are useless. The illustration is too small to be of any value and the text "see above" is equally useless. Furthermore even if the illustration were larger and more clear the printing was of such low quality that you would still have issues. You can figure it out but this should be clear as a bell in the directions.

3) The screws, soft and cheap. I drilled proper sized pilot holes(just under root diameter of the screw) and had cam-out issues with the heads. My house is 80+ years old and the joists are dry, old, hard pine but still...

I will be ordering a second - good product if you don't mind some additional work on your own.

The lift works wonderfully. The only small downside was in the installation instructions. How the rope feeds through the locking system was a little unclear.
